insight from a local

How I use medical services in Mexico

Minor illnesses

We use the doctor at the pharmacy (Guadalajara, Del Ahorro or Similares are almost free, consultation is usually under $100 pesos)

Minor illnesses as defined by Parkside Medical center in the UK: Ear Infections Middle Ear Infections Outer Ear Infections Sore Throats Coughs Colds Flu Sinusitis Hay Fever Fever Skin Rashes Impetigo & Skin Infections Urine Infections Vaginal Discharge Thrush Minor Injuries Constipation Diarrhoea & Vomiting Minor Burns Wounds Indigestion

DENTAL and eye care

We use the local private practitioners, eye centers or dental centers and pay for the service, we found it fair and good service

MAJOR DISEASES

This is tricky, read your options in section below

Major diseases as defined by WHO (World Health Organization) are : Ischemic heart disease, or coronary artery disease. ... Stroke. ... Lower respiratory infections. ... Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. ... Trachea, bronchus, and lung cancers. ... Diabetes mellitus and similar.

emergency: RED CROSS vs PRIVATE AMBULANCES

Red cross lives on charity (no government funds) and they care for ambulance service ONLY, we don't stay at red cross clinic, we found it nasty and ill equipped

Besides red cross, Green cross works with the federal public free service, check "Seguro Popular" item below.

Regarding private ambulance service, it is scarce around Chapala lake but abundant in near Guadalajara (air transport available), please check under "insurance", and "other options" items for more info on pre-hired emergency transportation services. and on "Private ambulance services" below for companies offering ambulance transportation services.

PRIVATE AMBULANCE SERVICES

PLEASE NOTE THAT WE DO NOT RECOMMEND OR ARE AFFILIATED TO ANY OF THESE SERVICES, THIS IS JUST A LIST THAT WAS LAST UPDATED WHEN THIS WAS WRITTEN

  • http://er-airambulance.com/ (AIR SERVICE)

This is a partial list and you might search under "Ambulancias Guadalajara" in your browser. Prices and options differ from each company and some will have english spoken service.

INSURANCE OPTIONS

US, Canadian or Mexican

Mexican insurance companies will limit coverage both on total amount paid and existent diseases when policy is issued, please check the internet for options and always read the small print. Mexican companies will limit the service you can get outside the country, both by time you are living outside Mexico, type of disease, and if it was an accident. Some US and Canadian companies will give coverage in Mexico. Premium Mexican policies will give coverage in all major hospitals and "unlimited" service.

public and private services

What is availble

PRIVATE HOSPITALS

From low cost clinics to state of the art hospitals you will get a very attentive and friendly service as long as you can pay, San Antonio Hospital and Ajijic hospital have always been good and inexpensive for us

Pros: Choose among beautiful, well equipped state of the art hospitals or smaller clinics at prices that are a fraction compared to the US, you choose your doctor and treatment is quick and - usually - friendly. You can find many English speaking doctors.

Cons: They tend to over diagnose to make a profit, will not move a finger if you don't have money to pay. If you can pay they will keep you alive at any cost.

Notes: Having a honorable knowledgeable doctor is priority, he will know best what to do and where to do it.

IMSS

Yes, it is possible to use IMSS, paying for the service, don't expect friendly attentive service, but rather huge well equipped hospitals with good doctors who will be in a hurry attending thousands of patients

Pros: Large well equipped medical centers and hospitals with well trained doctors. They will do only what is really needed. Several of my friends have been saved from major diseases like Cancer at IMSS.

Cons: Service can be slow, emergency service can be slow too (unless you are bleeding they don't care if it hurts, as long as you don't die). Paying patients might get a faster service.

Notes: Don't expect English speaking staff.

SEGURO POPULAR

This service in the process of being totally replaced by IMSS is easily available to anyone living in Mexico, with many large hospitals and small clinics enrolled

Pros: Easy, free or almost free, full coverage for almost any disease, well equipped large hospitals and local clinics. We found Jocotepec hospital a good option, have use some small clinics in Tamasopo and Loreto with excellent results and impeccable locations for minor accidents and vaccines

Cons: Major Hospitals are crowded by low income people, service can be slow or fatally slow in an emergency, but you can make appointments for treatment. Medicines - specially expensive treatments - can be scarce or unavailable.

Notes: Don't expect English speaking staff.

OTHER OPTIONS

Medical groups such as Mutuus, Das, Vita, Amep and more give medical services at low cost on a limited way, with a yearly payment

Pros: easy, cheap

Cons: very limited, check each option

Notes: They will not cover any major disease or large hospital bills, but will help with their own staff (doctors usually take 50% of the expense) and get you discounts on lab service and hospitals. Some include ambulance transportation service.

Notes: Designed for families, but individuals ok.
